“This is no arbitrary decree on the part of a bloodthirsty God”.
Scripture tells us the life of all flesh (human or animal) is in the blood. When the blood is poured out (shed), the flesh dies. The Scripture’s reference to the blood of Christ is a reference to His death: the sacrifice of His life by the shedding of His blood. When the Bible speaks of the blood of Jesus, some people attribute almost a mystical character to what flowed through the veins of Jesus of Nazareth…if Jesus scratched His finger on a nail and drew blood, wouldn’t that be enough since salvation comes through the blood of Christ? No. Jesus didn’t simply have to bleed, He had to die because the penalty that God imposes upon sin is death. So when the Bible says “through faith in His blood,” it literally means through faith in His death.
Many people today believe that emphasizing the blood of Christ is crude, primitive and beneath the dignity of man. This is in sharp contrast to the emphasis of Scripture, where the blood of Christ is deemed to be worthy of our highest praise and honor:
This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
In Him we have redemption (release from guilt/deliverance) through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses.
But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
You were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold…but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
To Him who loves us, and released us from our sins by His blood…
Thou wast slain and didst purchase for God with Thyblood men from every tribe.
Worthy is the Lamb that was slain.
